The Road to Reading: Key Components of a High-Quality Pre-K Literacy Program (Teaching Strategies)

As an early educator or school leader, you know how important early literacy is. You also know how overwhelming it can feel to navigate the sea of products, each promising to build a different skill such as phonics or vocabulary, often without showing the full picture.

Register Here

What do young children truly need, and when? How do we ensure that each piece fits into a meaningful, developmentally appropriate path toward lifelong reading success?

At Teaching Strategies, we created Kickstart Literacy — our new literacy curriculum for pre-K grounded in the science of reading — to offer explicit literacy instruction with a clear, research-informed scope and sequence. Children build foundational skills through play and purposeful practice, in the ways that they learn best.

Join our early literacy and language experts for a rich, research-driven conversation on

  • the power of play- and practice-based experiences in supporting phonemic awareness and early phonics,

  • the right scope of early phonics instruction in pre-K to set children up for kindergarten success,

  • the most effective ways to introduce children to phonemes and their corresponding letters with joy and intention, and

  • how spiraled instruction helps children revisit and deepen their understanding of literacy concepts.

Come away with insights you can apply right away and a renewed confidence in guiding children’s literacy journey from the very beginning.

The session will be followed by a live Q&A. Register Here

Your Role in Cultivating Psychological Safety in Early Care and Education Programs

Your Role in Cultivating Psychological Safety in Early Care and Education Programs

It is the responsibility of a leader to create a culture where people can flourish. Whether you are the leader of an early care and education program or the leader of a team within one, you hold the tools for cultivating an environment where candor and truth are welcome and the organization and individuals within it are on a path to learning and growth. When staff are afraid to speak up, offer opposing viewpoints, provide constructive feedback, make mistakes, and collaborate with colleagues, they suffer and the organization is stunted. Unfortunately, many leaders are unaware that staff are fearful.

If you’ve ever wondered why a program or classroom feels stressed, frenzied, or just not right, chances are that the PITCH is one of the primary causes of that “ick” feeling. There are four types of environments in early childhood programs: The Physical environment, the Interpersonal environment, the Temporal environment, and the Curricular environment. These four,: P, I, T, and C can be designed to create harmony in each classroom and the program. When they work well, your program has the right PITCH, and everything flows. When they do not work together, programs may be dysregulated.

You may already know how to set up most of these environments, but you might not realize that the temporal environment is responsible for an imbalance. The temporal environment is all about timing: Daily schedules, including arrival, snacks, choice time, group times, outdoor play, and the transitions from one to the other. Directors often set up schedules for teachers to have turns with their classes on playgrounds, in music, dance, etc. But is the schedule really working for the children, or are the adults scheduling to fit children into constructs that work for them, not the children?

In this paradigm-shifting webinar by Dr. Tamar Andrews, professor and the Director of Early Childhood Education at American Jewish University and Lindsay Astor Grant, MA, OTR/L, Occupational Therapy Consultant from Learning Redesigned, you will explore how to find the right PITCH, with a special focus on temporal environments. Tamar will deepen your understanding of predictable routines and help you uncover how to know when the PITCH in your program is working.

Strategies that Build Connection and Empathy with Children Using The Power of Perspective-Taking

Strategies that Build Connection and Empathy with Children Using The Power of Perspective-Taking
February 6, 2025 | 2 PM Eastern Time
FREE

In our early childhood programs and communities, often we focus on the skills of kindness and empathy as a way for children to connect with others in a caring, positive way. Yet a skill often overlooked is perspective-taking. “Perspective taking skills” refer to the ability to understand and consider a situation from another person’s point of view, encompassing their thoughts, feelings, and experiences and putting aside our own. It goes beyond empathy, as it not only understanding someone’s emotions, yet also understanding their reasoning and viewpoint. This session will focus on how we can support children’s growth in these skills, sharing specific examples that can be shared in early childhood programs and with families.

Transforming Challenging Behavior Through Visionary Leadership: The Impact of Culture when Communicating with Staff and Families, by Barbara Kaiser

Preschool classrooms are microcosms of the world’s cultures. In them, you find educators, children, families, and administrators from every walk of life who bring a rich tapestry of experiences, values, and norms. This convergence of diverse viewpoints has assets and opportunities for cultural conflict, especially when it comes to children’s behavior. It is natural for different people to view behavior through their own lenses and respond accordingly, often leading to conflict and confusion for all involved.

When you know and understand how your culture influences your leadership style – your vision, your expectations, and how you communicate with your staff and the families you are in a better position to work together to support all children. Join early childhood social-emotional and behavior expert, Barbara Kaiser for another one of her insightful and enlightening webinars that will lead you to explore your cultural influences and how they impact your ability to lead staff, work with families, interpret children’s behaviors, and create a cohesive supportive environment.

In this session, you will explore the role you play as a support to teachers and families when challenging behavior occurs by:

  • Defining your role when challenging behavior occurs

  • Recognizing the impact of culture on your leadership style when working with staff and families

  • Creating partnerships

Hosted by the Devereux Center: Free, Virutal

Fully understanding the concepts of risk factors, protective factors, and resilience can serve as a powerful catalyst for helping each of us navigate life's challenges. Parents, families, teachers, and anyone interested in learning more are invited to this interactive, reflective learning experience. Join us as we uncover some of the key terms often found in the resilience research. We will define those key terms and think about what each word means to us, individually.

This is a one-hour webinar. Can't make the live delivery? You can still register so that you receive the recording!
